Foliar‐applied sulfate and potassium does not reduce rice grain arsenic concentrations nor straighthead severity

چکیده

Arsenic (As) is naturally present in all soils and can accumulate to toxic levels rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains under some production conditions. It also reduce grain yields, posing a double threat global food security. Plant genetics affect the amount of As accumulated grains. A growing body evidence suggests that one mechanism plants use detoxify limit concentrations (grain-As) sequester vegetative tissues. We evaluated 17 cultivars previously shown have contrastingly high or low grain-As. Cultivars grain-As commonly transferred out their flag leaves during fill, while eight having retained leaves, effectively excluding it from transfer developing Sequestration cell vacuoles involves several sulfur (S)-containing compounds. hypothesized enhanced leaf concentration S via foliar fertilization could further Effect foliar-S on was studied field-scale plot experiments. The study included known retain fill grown both As-enriched Native (non-enriched) soils, severity ratings for straighthead, an As-induced disorder. Contrary hypothesis, did increase grain-S concentrations, not prove useful reducing grain-As, nor straighthead severity, possibly because soil deficient used biochemical other than S-related chelation sequestration leaves.

Magnesium sulfate does not reduce postoperative analgesic requirements.

BACKGROUND Because magnesium blocks the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor and its associated ion channels, it can prevent central sensitization caused by peripheral nociceptive stimulation. However, transport of magnesium from blood to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) across the blood-brain barrier is limited in normal humans. The current study was designed to evaluate whether perioperative intravenous ma...

Arsenic-induced straighthead: an impending threat to sustainable rice production in South and South-East Asia!

Straighthead is a physiological disorder of rice (Oryza sativa L.) that results in sterile florets with distorted lemma and palea, and the panicles or heads may not form at all in extreme cases. Heads remain upright at maturity, hence the name 'straighthead'. The diseased panicles may not emerge from the flag leaf sheath when the disease is severe. Straighthead disease in rice results in poorly...

Arsenic Transport in Rice and Biological Solutions to Reduce Arsenic Risk from Rice

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) feeds ∼3 billion people. Due to the wide occurrence of arsenic (As) pollution in paddy soils and its efficient plant uptake, As in rice grains presents health risks. Genetic manipulation may offer an effective approach to reduce As accumulation in rice grains. The genetics of As uptake and metabolism have been elucidated and target genes have been identified for genetic e...

Arsenic in rice: I. Estimating normal levels of total arsenic in rice grain.

High levels of arsenic (As) in rice grain are a potential concern for human health. Variability in total As in rice was evaluated using 204 commercial rice samples purchased mostly in retail stores in upstate New York and supplemented with samples from Canada, France, Venezuela, and other countries. Total As concentration in rice varied from 0.005 to 0.710 mg kg(-1). We combined our data set wi...
